Alexandra Tolstoy
Alexandra Tolstoy is an author and experienced traveller.
Alexandra received an MA (Hons) in Russian from the University of Edinburgh. After leaving an unfulfilling life as an Eastern European equities broker, she decided to travel and work around the globe. During this time she spent six weeks walking the Old Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route through Spain.
As a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, she completed the 8 month long Silk Road Expedition. A journey travelling solely by horse and camel, retracing 5,000 miles of one of the former trading routes that make up the ancient Silk Road. Alexandra went on to document her astonishing journey in the book The Last Secrets of the Silk Road, which was published internationally.
Alexandra moved to Moscow, and continued to travel in Central Asia. In 2002 Alexandra and a friend rode 3,000 miles on horseback through Mongolia and Siberia.
Alexandra has received a second contract from Profile to write a book, an account of the journey, to be titled The Horses of Heaven.
Alexandra currently lives in Moscow, where she works for various British luxury brands, assisting them to promote their businesses and profile in Russia. Her clients have included Yo! Sushi, for whom Alexandra secured a Russian franchise partner, Nicky Haslam (NH Design) and Stolichnaya. She is currently Asprey's ambassador to Russia, and is working on the prestigious Laureus Awards, to be held in St Petersburg.
Her BBC Series ‘The Power of Horse' was shown on BBC2 in 2009.
