Michael’s debut feature BEAST, starring Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn, premiered to a great reaction at Toronto Film Festival followed by Sundance Film Festival before it played in competition at London Film Festival. It was financed by BFI/Film4 and was acquired for UK by Altitude for release in 2018 and 30west in the US. Its long string of nominations and awards include the Outstanding Debut BAFTA Award, 9 BIFA nominations including Best Director and Best Screenplay, The London Critics Film Circle Award for Breakthrough Filmmaker and The Platform Prize at TIFF.
His following feature, ENCOUNTER, released in 2021 for Film4 and Amazon Studios, starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer. Michael’s upcoming feature is ECHO VALLEY for Apple Studios and Scott Free Productions, written by Brad Ingelsby, and starring Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney.
From Jersey, based in London, Michael studied Film Directing at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and the National Film & Television School where his graduation film, MADRUGADA, won Best Short at The Royal Television Society Awards.
His next short film, RITE, was nominated at the 2011 BAFTA’s and a BIFA’s, screened at 40 international film festivals and won Best Film at Rushes Soho Film Festival, Message2Man and Almeria Film Festival. In 2011 Michael was selected to one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow and in 2012 was selected for BFI Shorts through which he made KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES. The film premiered at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and was nominated at the 2014 BAFTA’s and is nominated at the 2014 BIFA’s. It won Best Thriller at London Short Film Festival and Aesthetica Short Film Festival.
In 2013 Michael was selected to be part of Channel Four’s Coming Up Scheme where he made HENRY, his debut TV drama. In 2014 he was selected to be part of Guiding Lights scheme and was mentored by Academy Award winner James Marsh.
