Steve was born and raised in Manchester where he trained as an actor at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre.
In 1992 he won the Perrier Award for his show and when on to win a BAFTA for ‘THE PAUL CALF VIDEO DIARIES’. Whilst working on radio, he created the character Alan Partridge which he then transferred to television on the show ‘KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU’ winning 3 British Comedy Awards.
In addition to his acting career, in 1999 Steve set up Baby Cow Productions with Henry Normal producing several award winning programmes including ‘THE MIGHTY BOOSH’, ‘GAVIN AND STACEY’ and more recently, ‘HUNDERBY’, ‘MOONE BOY’ and ‘HEBBURN’.
In 2013, he starred in Michael Winterbottom’s feature film “THE KING OF SOHO” playing real-life London porn baron turned property millionaire Paul Raymond. In 2014, Steve won his fifth BAFTA award for his comedy performance in ‘ALAN PARTRIDGE: WELCOME TO THE PLACES IN MY LIFE’.
Recent feature film credits includes PHILOMENA which he stars in alongside Judi Dench, directed by Stephen Frears. This was released in the UK and the US in November 2013 and received numerous five- star reviews. Steve co-wrote Philomena with Jeff Pope and the film won Best Screenplay at Venice Film Festival 2013. It was nominated for four Oscars and was nominated for three Golden Globes. He has just finished the latest series of award winning THE TRIP opposite Rob Brydon which will air later this year.
His most recent feature work includes comedy IDEAL HOME with Paul Rudd and drama THE DINNER.
