Fergus O’Brien

Fergus directed the third and final series of HAPPY VALLEY, and has since been directing the lead block of THE TOURIST 2 for Two Brothers.

Fergus began directing drama in 2016 after an illustrious career as a documentary producer & director.

For his first drama project, Fergus developed and directed the BBC2 single AGAINST THE LAW starring Danny Mays. It was part of the Gay Britannia season on the BBC to mark the decriminalisation of homosexuality and tells the story of the writer Peter Wildeblood (Mays) who was tried and jailed for being gay alongside Lord Montagu. It’s an incredibly moving and thoughtful piece that’s had unanimous acclaim and has been nominated for a BAFTA and Broadcast Award for Best Single Drama.

Fergus’s next project was BBC single drama MOTHER’S DAY, starring Anna Maxwell Martin, Vicky McClure and Danny Mays. The film tells the story of the aftermath of the IRA bombing of Warrington in 1993. The film won ‘Best International TV Movie, BANFF International Media Festival, 2019 and was nominated for ‘Best Single Drama’, RTS Awards 2019.

Fergus’s next step was lead director on the third series of THE A WORD for BBC1. He directed the second series of Sally Wainwright’s acclaimed GENTLEMAN JACK for BBC1 and HBO.
