Óskar Thór Axelsson

Writer & Director

A native of Iceland and a graduate from NYU’s Film Program, Oskar has extensive background in TV commercials production. Among Oskar’s numerous short films are his NYU thesis, Misty Mountain, a Student Academy Awards nominee, and the award winning caper comedy Nylon.

BLACK’S GAME marked Oskar’s feature debut. Based on an Icelandic best-selling novel, it chronicles the true story of how Iceland’s underworld came of age in the late 1990s. It became the highest grossing Icelandic film of this decade.

Oskar directed 3 episodes of the ZDF/BBC co-produced TV series TRAPPED, created by Baltasar Kormákur, that premiered in 2016 to all around critical and commercial success. From October 2017 to April 2018 Oskar will be directing 2 episodes of TRAPPED 2.

Oskar’s most recent film is I REMEMBER YOU, which he adapted from the internationally acclaimed ghost novel by Yrsa Sigurdardottir. It premiered in May 2017 and is Iceland’s no. 1 box office hit 2017 and Iceland’s 2nd highest grossing film of the decade (right behind BLACK’S GAME!). The TV series STELLA BLOMKVIST – of which Oskar directed all 6 episodes – based on the noir book series by the same name premiered in November 2017 in Iceland and will travel the world over in 2018.

In the 2nd half of 2018 Oskar directed 4 episodes of the TV Series SANCTUARY, produced by Yellowbird. Oskar then went on to direct some episodes of RIVIERA for Sky at the end of 2019.

Among projects in development is a 2nd season of STELLA BLOMKVIST, which has already been commissioned by broadcasters; the Millennium Films produced POINT OF VIOLENCE and THE TRAVELER, which Oskar also wrote. Furthermore there is FEAR, an original TV series Oskar is the creator of, about two lost teenage souls that decide to become serial killers.

Oskar resides in Iceland with his wife and two children, who will either grow up to become mad scientists like their mother or great filmmakers like Roman Polanski.
