Joanna Coates is an award-winning director and screenwriter. Her debut feature drama, Hide and Seek, won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and she was BAFTA-nominated for her documentary directing work for the Royal National Theatre. Hide and Seek’s international release in 2016-17 followed the success of her short films Where Are They Now? and Little Ones. She is currently in pre-production on feature drama MARION ACKERMAN with producer Camille Gatin (The Girl With All The Gifts) and executive producer Peter Rommel (Cloud 9, Wetlands). MARION ACKERMAN’s development was supported by the BFI.

Joanna is attached as a director to VIRTUE, a psychological Gothic horror feature written by Sam Hoare, produced by Alex Cook, with HanWay providing sales and executive producing. Game Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Romola Garai are attached.

As a screenwriter, Joanna is currently adapting Jane Austen’s The Watsons into a narrative feature, supported by the BFI, with Camille Gatin producing. Joanna also works in non-narrative moving image and recent commissions include a major 2-year installation for the National Trust and Arts Council-funded projects in Stoke on Trent. She has directed long-form and short arts documentaries for organisations including Channel Four, the Royal National Theatre, Royal Opera House, The Guardian.
