Anthony Philipson began his television career working on music and entertainment shows including the ground breaking first series of Big Brother and the era defining Big Breakfast. From here he moved into factual television directing the first episode of the BAFTA winning series Ross Kemp on Gangs followed soon afterwards by the critically acclaimed Coppers for Channel 4 which was both BAFTA and GRIERSON nominated. Channel 4’s 24 Hours in A&E was next and proved another critical success earning 2 RTS awards. Now an ever present on British Television Anthony was responsible for directing the entire first series.
The success of these documentary series led Anthony into drama where he directed the first series of Youngers for E4 followed by the EMMY nominated second series of My Mad Fat Diary as lead director. Between these two credits he was also instrumental in setting up the hugely popular First Dates for Channel 4, which was rewarded in 2016 with a BAFTA. In late 2017 Anthony wrote and directed single drama Shamed for Channel 4, which aired to excellent reviews.
In 2014 Anthony was lead director on Our Girl, a primetime drama for BBC1 starring Lacey Turner, and returned to direct the final series in 2020. He also directed Cuffs starring Amanda Abbington and Ashley Walters, and New Blood written by Anthony Horowitz also for BBC1. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission in 2019 came 8 Days to the Moon and Back, a pioneering feature length drama documentary that was rewarded with several award nominations including a BAFTA, RTS and EMMY. In 2021 he wrote and directed Liverpool Narcos, a 3 part drama documentary series for Sky, as well as directing two episodes of the hugely popular The Last Kingdom for Netflix.
He has since shot some episodes of Living the Dream for Big Talk/ Sky and his 90 minute drama documentary for the BBC about Apollo 11 titled 8 Days went out to 5* reviews and was nominated for an Emmy and a BAFTA.
