Brian Welsh

Director/ Writer

Brian Welsh’s first feature film, “IN OUR NAME,” (written and directed by Brian) was created at the National Film School. The film was distributed by Curzon Artificial Eye, marking the launch of their Curzon on-demand platform. “IN OUR NAME” not only garnered critical acclaim but also earned Joanne Froggatt a British Independent Film Award. Additionally, the film received a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Achievement in Production, and Brian was nominated for Best British Newcomer at the London Film Festival (LFF).
Brian also directed the final episode of the first season of “BLACK MIRROR,” titled “THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF YOU,” which was written by Jesse Armstrong and featured Jodie Whittaker. The show, during its run on Channel 4, won both an International Emmy Award and the Rose D’Or Award. It has since become available on Netflix.
Brian directed the entire season of “MAYDAY” for Kudos and the BBC, featuring Sophie Okonedo, Aiden Gillan, and Lesley Manville. He followed this with the direction of the three-part BBC feature “The ESCAPE ARTIST,” starring David Tennant and Monica Dolan. This show earned David Tennant a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor.
Brian’s collaboration with Joe Barton led to the co-writing and direction of the TV movie “GLASGOW GIRLS,” starring Letitia Wright for the BBC. The film received several accolades, including a Broadcast Award for Best Original Programme, a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Original Programme, and a Royal Television Society of Scotland Award for Best Drama.
Continuing in the realm of TV movies, Brian directed “THE RACK PACK,” which earned him a nomination for Television Director of the Year at the Royal Television Society of Scotland Awards.
His second feature film, “BEATS,” co-written and directed by Brian, was produced with support from BFI, 16FILMS, and ALTITUDE. This film garnered attention and praise, leading to a Writers Guild nomination for Best Screenplay. Brian himself received a nomination for Best Director at the BAFTA Scotland Awards. The film also secured the Hamilton Award at the Torino Film Festival and earned newcomer Lorn McDonald a Best Actor Award at the BAFTA Scotland Awards. “BEATS” was further nominated for and won several British Independent Film Awards, and has become a cult classic.
Currently, Brian Welsh is actively engaged in the development of multiple projects in both the UK and the US. One notable project is a feature film for Paramount Studios, which is being produced by Steven Soderbergh and Scott Frank.
