John Maybury

John Maybury is a painter, writer and director. In the late seventies John was shooting his first films in and around London’s punk scene – at this time he was introduced to Derek Jarman and worked on his film ‘Jubilee’ (1977), designing sets and costumes, and he was later to work on ‘Last of England’ (1977), as an editor and on ‘War Requiem’ (1988) designing and editing the war sequences.

By the early 80’s Maybury was a leading light in the British underground film and art scene, pioneering with a style that was unashamedly exotic, with influences from Jean Cocteau to Kenneth Anger.

Maybury directed music videos for Boy George, Cindy Lauper, Marc Almond, and Morrissey to name but a few, but worked most prolifically with Sinead O’Connor. ‘Nothing compares 2 U’ won 3 awards including MTV’s best video award.

In 1991 British designer Rifat Ozbek commissioned two half hour fashion films from John as a technological progressions from conventional catwalk shows. In 1992 Tilda Swinton approached Maybury to create a cinematic interpretation of her stage play ‘Man to Man’. The resulting film received the international critics’ prize at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Maybury’s Film ‘Remembrance of All things’ Fast won the LA Critics Circle award for the best Independent/Experimental Film of 1994. It won many awards including the Golden Jury Teddy Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and Best Experimental Film at the Viper Film Festival in Zurich.

‘Love Is The Devil’, Maybury’s film about the Life of Francis Bacon starring Daniel Craig in the title role, was hugely successful at the Cannes film festival in 1998. Maybury more recently completed ‘The Edge of Love’ starring Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller.

He has recently finished on two episodes of ‘Marco Polo’ for Netflix after doing two episodes of ‘The Borgias’ in both 2011 and 2012.
