John began his writing career by writing and producing his own stage plays for local theatres around Liverpool, including several plays for Kirkby Response Theatre. His later credits include the stage plays ‘The Cruel Sea’ and ‘Eat My Eyes’. In 2005 he received the British Academy Television Award for Best Continuing Drama for his work on CORONATION STREET, sharing the BAFTA with producer Tony Wood and director Ian Bevitt. In 2013, he created the period television series THE MILL for Channel 4 based on real-life stories of the textile mill workers at Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire. He has written episodes for Jimmy McGovern’s BAFTA-nominated and RTS-winning MOVING ON, Russell T Davies’ TORCHWOOD and Frank Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer’s sweeping political family drama MEDICI: MASTERS OF FLORENCE for Rai 1 / Netflix. Between 2020 and 2022, John worked with Izabela Lopuch and Danuta Krasnohorska writing the original 6-part series THE VAMPIRE FAMILY for HBO Poland. He is currently developing original ideas with Mainstreet Pictures and Hat Trick.
